Art provides pupils with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in our society.
Art contributes to pupils personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self reflection. Moreover, it enables pupils to develop a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them.
Airedale Academy’s Art curriculum intent:
- Pupils will develop proficiency in drawing, painting, understanding colour and shade and sculpture, with the overall aim of developing an understanding, awareness and inspiration of art and design,
- Pupils will study key artists and develop knowledge of their work,
- Pupils will develop an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists and designers throughout history,
- Pupils will develop their understanding of the visual elements of art and design; line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape and 3D form,
- Pupils will develop their skills in the visual elements enabling them to produce their own compositions.
- Pupils have 1 hour per week to study Art,
- Pupils access the KS3 National Curriculum for Art and Design in Years 7 to 9 to progress to the Eduqas GCSE in Art and Design qualification at KS4,
- Pupils will practice and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing and sculpture,
- Pupils will studying existing pieces of art, sketching aspects of these, with a particular focus on the necessary skills, before completing final pieces and their own compositions,
- Pupils will be given constructive feedback with clear next steps and further opportunities to create art pieces, to improve their work and ensure that skills are being developed,
- Pupils evidence of their work is collected within their art sketch book.
- Pupils will have developed the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in creative elements of the world,
- Pupils will have applied knowledge, understanding and skills in order to produce a range of Art pieces using a range of media,
- Pupils will have produced a range of Art pieces of their own compositions and also based on the compositions of others,
- Pupils will critique and evaluate their Art pieces as well as the work of others,
- Pupils are prepared for post 16 learning or routes into local employers in creative industries,
- Pupils are able to make a positive contribution to modern creative industries.
